What To Do If Your Smart Lock Becomes Stiff in Cold Weather
All Simpled smart locks are designed to work in temperatures from -10°C to 55°C.
However, in some locations, condensation (moisture) can form inside the lock through the emergency keyhole at the bottom of the lock.
Even a tiny amount of moisture can freeze or block the lock, making it stiff or hard to turn.
Signs of a Frozen or Stiff Lock
- You notice that your emergency key at the bottom is difficult to turn.
- The lock may not operate smoothly until it warms up naturally.
Quick Fix If the Lock Is Stiff
- Use the emergency key and turn it firmly and persistently for up to one minute.
- Sometimes the cylinder is stiff and needs extra pressure to turn fully.
- Avoid using a hairdryer or any intense heat, as this can damage the lock’s electronics.
- If possible, wait for the lock to thaw naturally in warmer daytime temperatures.
Preventing Future Freezing
- Once the lock is fully thawed, you can use an Air Duster (available online) to dry out the lock from the keyhole.
- A very small amount of WD-40 or a graphite lubricant in the keyhole can help remove moisture and reduce the chance of freezing in the future.
Why This Matters
Even though your Simpled smart lock is built for cold weather, moisture can sometimes create temporary issues.
Following these steps will ensure your lock keeps working smoothly and reliably, even in winter.
