Installation Issues – Spindle Clash With Hole
How to identify and fix spindle misalignment that blocks handle movement and prevents locking
If your handle does not return properly or the lock cannot fully engage, the issue may be caused by the spindle sitting off-centre in the door hole.
When the spindle is not centered, the spindle receptor (cup) will hit the edge of the hole during rotation. This blocks movement and prevents the lock from working correctly.
This is a common installation issue and must be corrected for proper operation.
The Problem
- The spindle is positioned above the centre of the door hole
- As the handle is used, the receptor/cup rotates
- The cup hits the top edge of the hole
- This contact blocks full rotation

Result:
- Handle feels stiff or blocked
- Locking function does not complete
- Long-term damage may occur if not fixed
How to Identify the Issue
Check the following:
- Look through the spindle hole in the door
- Confirm whether the spindle is centered or sitting too high
If the spindle is not centered:
- You will likely see uneven spacing (more space at the bottom than the top)
- This confirms a clash with the hole
The Solution
You have two possible solutions, depending on the installation:
Option 1: Enlarge the Hole
- Increase the size of the spindle hole
- Focus especially on the top section where contact occurs
You can:
- Widen the entire hole
OR - Carefully chisel away the top area only
✅ Goal: Ensure the receptor/cup can rotate freely without touching the hole
⚠️ This step should be carried out carefully by a professional locksmith to avoid any damage to the door.
Option 2: Adjust the Mortice Position
(Only applicable for a single locking point mortice)
- Move the mortice slightly downwards
- This will reposition the spindle so it becomes centered in the hole
✅ Goal: Align the spindle correctly instead of modifying the hole
Additional Important Step
To improve performance:
- Ensure the split pin is fully pushed in
- Wrap the two tails tightly around the outside of the cup
This helps keep the mechanism secure and reduces movement issues.
Still Not Working?
If the issue continues:
- Check alignment again after adjustment
- Look for any remaining contact points
- Send photos to support for faster diagnosis
Fixing the alignment will ensure smooth handle movement and reliable locking.
